I would like to nominate all the guys who work in the "grass shack" , next to the dog pound at the Lake co gov't complex. these are real professional slackers, who check in at 7 am, do nothing until 11 am, at which point they break for a 2 hr lunch. after lunch comes the customary 2 hr nap, and then its time to get ready to go home. I'm sure they learned this from their superiors, who instructed them in the fine art of slacking. The real kicker, is how they unload the scrap metal junk from various buildings from around the county and city of gary, and turn the scrap metal into cash, using free labor from day release at the jail, and free labor from community service pools. this seems to be the way the whole of lake county is run, from the bottom up..

UC Reply: Sounds like the ditty from The Wizard of Oz - "We get up at noon and start to work at one, take an hour for lunch and then at two we're done." And if memory serves, didn't the term "grass shack" have multiple meanings at one point?

Well done, IB Working Hard.

Here's the real conflict for ARD. As an employee of the Gary City CCourt, she is director of Pre-Trial Services, meaning that she decides who is eligble for pre-trial diversion. Within her discretion, is the ability to recommend a counseling service, including her own employer, in exchange for the dismissal of charges. Wonder if she receives a "bonus" for all referrals.

UC Responds: Kinda nice to be in a position to order up customers for your employer, yes? Thanks for the kite, Will.

There is a modicum of humor in the story. I do believe one must have experienced the Region first hand to truly appreciate it, though.

It does remind me of an incident I personally witnessed at the Indiana Statehouse in the early '70's. Some yahoo legislator actually stood up and introduced a bill to cede Lake County to Illinois! Being from Gary, I was livid! Whether the bill was a sick attempt at humor, or who knows what, it infuriated me that this was how are hard earned tax dollars were being expended on our behalf.

Lake County has a rich history. One can be proud of their Region roots. To explore some of the history, geography, economics, politics and culture of the area, check out the offerings at Dave's Den. The url for the site is http://GDYNets.WebNG.com.

UC Responds: Good points. But there's a sense that the "rich history" will vanish, and the "economics, politics and culture of the area" will further decay, in the absence of some fundamental change in local government and local politics. Unless that happens, we may become the Island of Misfit Toys here. And see the "Dispatch" on 01.21.08 to get some idea of the purpose behind the humor here.

[...] Area 45 says that there is a well-placed rumor that Gary, Indiana’s financial problems may soon come to a head. The prospect that Barden may turn off the financial faucet might explain the recent rumor (a well-placed rumor, but a rumor nonetheless) that some sort of municipal bankruptcy looms on Gary’s horizon.
[...] Area 45 takes on journey of the mind to see what historians years from now will see when they look back on Gary, Indiana today. Let’s try a dystopian exercise in imagination and assume, for the sake of argument, that the lamentable decline of Gary is irreversible. What will its ruins look like? In the centuries to come, will the Genesis Center be Lake County’s answer to the Coliseum in Rome? [...]
